Long Skirts and Peppermint Memories

Cold granite, etched and eternal
Yellowed grass infringing upon a perimeter
Seeking fertile ground
By tendril and shoot.

My tears will not spill
Upon this empty place
Haunted and hollow
Immortalized by memory and loss

She is not here, no
She is not here

I remember long skirts and lavender
Where I used to hide
From fear and fancy
Safe within the starched folds of Gran’s world
And she would laugh
Shooing me out
But only after I was calm again
Safe in the knowledge I was loved
Absolutely and forever
With a peppermint to send me on my way.

Cold wind blows through my clothes
As I drop daisies to earth
Knowing the act is selfish
Meant to soothe a heart in pain

But I will not spill a salty flow here
For it is empty
Devoid of spirit and soul
For the world has moved on as always.

I love you Gran, and I miss you.
But live safe in that knowledge still;
I was loved
Absolutely and forever,
And I will leave this place now.
With tears falling
That taste of peppermint receding, as I walk away.
