PSYCHE

She hides  in the caves beneath the sea
Patiently waiting  to  be  set  free

A  wandering sailor  will  open  her  lair
Just by his presence, when he passes there

His fate by her has thus been sealed
Having no protection,  nor any shield

Sensing his  vulnerable  desires and deeds
Transforming  herself  to  whatever   he needs

To  some  she  is   a  nymph  like  curse
Singing  her  prose  ,  her  tempting  verse

Luring him on  beyond  the  edge
Dangerously causing his heart to tread

Her eyes are emerald, her lips are red
The water her home,  her  deep soft  bed

She wants him not,  she only  plays
The seaman is driven in a deep dark craze

A  nymphlike  fish,  a  mystical  muse
With female parts,  if  she  should  choose

Other men would rather see
A monster rise  above the sea

And thus the fish transforms himself
Into a gruesome  slippery  elf

An ugly creature with huge sharp teeth
Who  hovers and dives within  the deep

Chasing  the  sailor  who  feeds  on  horror
Making a  nightmare  her  magical  parlor

And so the mermaid  is  mythical   lore
A  valuptuous  woman,  or a  fiendish  whore.
