Revolving Ring

A tiny box,sweetly wrapped
that you put in my hand
not sensing how my heart fell with a thud
at the look in your eyes.
A ring within a ring
two bands that spun free of each other
still locked tight in form.
It was a symbol yes---
but what it meant to me
as I sat apart from you
swallowing tears like ground glass.
You meant well---
meant to please me,
but all I could see
was two seperate orbits
bound by cold metal
and a heart that had been locked away
for too damned long
that you could not even find the path
that two years before
had been clear and open and free.
