Nostalgic
In my late twenties,
I thought I had to plant things
to feel grounded,
rooted to a home.
I started with a cherry tree,
then daffodils, a tea olive
and an herb garden,
scarlet and yellow daylilies
and finally, fourth generation
violets who lived through
multitudes of transplantings.
And then I met you.
I completely uprooted
and in the first state we lived,
I started planting again.
The more I shuffled dirt,
the less I felt attached.
I already knew another move
was in our future.
Now the dust has settled
and though growth is
all around us,
it is you who tends the plants
and nurtures them to bloom.
I hardly ever wonder
who is watching over
the violets that I left behind.
