The Love of Isis

Hear me now, sons and daughters of man---
this miracle you call love,
and play with like a toy
was bought for you
by Two who walked in the steps of the gods.

Isis, morning star mother of dawn,
beloved of Osiris
the all Father.
When deception tricked him
into Death,
she would not let him vanish
to the sands of time.

She bade them wash his sweet body in wine,
scent him with herbs,
and wrap him softly in muslin
until her return.
And then she,
Goddess Queen, and more
descended to the underworld,
to darkness and death---
not to die,
but to lead back her love
to the hope of light and life.

And when she found him there,
he knew her not---
not when she spoke his name,
not when her tears touched him
like warm sweet rain,
but her life was so potent
that he followed her,
battled the dark,
and his own demons.

They say she carried no food,
and when he might have died of soul hunger,
she suckled him with her milk
and gave him the strength
to take the last steps
into the glory of the sun.

She led him to where his shell was kept,
and there by tears, and love
and the force of her passion
made him remember
who he had been---
And the God was reborn,
calling the name of she
who dared the eternal darkness
to rescue his soul.

Such was the love of Isis---
and what do we poor mortals
know of such a glory?
