What I Really Meant

You were standing right there, in front of me
Smiling at me, through all of your pain
Shrapnel in your skin, from when it all went down
But, no, that didn't seem right
You were never to return, that's what I was told...
Yet, there, there you were, the world upon your back
Shoulders sagging, old wounds bleeding, new wounds tearing
Bathed in sunlight, but yearning for the shadows
Seeking comfort from me, your heart begging solace
I stood there blinking, thinking I was dreaming
And, such a stillness settled in around us, enfolding us
In the stillness, there was a freedom, an unearthly grace
Something greater than the moon, the sun, the stars
Something words cannot transcribe...
Yes, I knew the secret, that I didn't want to see, before
That it almost slipped away from us
The essence was almost lost to us, in the translation
One heart speaking to the other, with hungry desperation
Speaking, using two very different languages
And just when I had thought that the meaning had been lost
That the message was not received, and never would be
Or it was received, and simply was unheeded
I find that it was all just a matter of time, of will
Of commitment, of faith, of trust
For it all was there, from my heart to yours, and back again
All we needed was a little work on the translation...
I stood stone-still, not knowing exactly what to say
Then you said, "I missed you."
I saw tears in your eyes, shimmering in the light
And I smiled, blinking back my own tears, unsuccessfully
And I said, "I missed you, too."
But, what I really meant was, "I love you."
