There's a man wearing a tattered mask Sitting in the corner of my mind He's singing softly to himself, a song I know so well "Bye, bye, Miss American Pie. Drove the Chevie to the levie, but the levie was dry...*" I smile at his words, for I know what he means He waves goodbye, but never leaves It's all just another distraction, in between acts Of this silly little play, that never seems to end The curtain rises...the curtain falls...the curtain rises A cycle so strange, another mystery I can't unravel... And he laughed, just now, 'cause he's happy again I haven't seen him happy, in a long time But, now that's all over, and everything's changed Finally, he's found his reason to smile And as he takes off his mask, grinning charm like a lark Then after a moment's pause...changes his tune Singing a song that I wrote, eons ago A melody that I composed just for him There are tears in my eyes, of happiness, as I sing along I thought that I had forgotten the words But, the lyrics freely flow from my lips I remember what it was like to love him As he softly sings, "Soon, I'll be home..." And we all know home is where the heart is Even though, now and then, the wanderer will roam *'American Pie'...by Don McLean |
