The cabin is set deep in the trees, nature's own air conditioning aided by ceiling fans, and we shut the fireplace and depend on broad screens to let in the breeze. You set the adriondack chairs on the deck, and hint that some sweet tea would hit the spot as we settle in for the lightshow at sunset. The sky is never the same twice, and fingers linked we play the cloud guessing game, and watch the horizon go from rose, to plum, violet. The stars will blaze later--- but as I breathe in honeysuckle larkspur and the sweet petunias we planted in pots, you smile at me--- then point. "They're here." And that quick, Mason jar in hand I'm off to greet the new guests--- lightning bugs, the male folk have taken quite a shine to their languid ladies who watch from the grass, and set up a glow. They light, and float and in no time, the jar fills with your sweet assistence. I want one kiss for every bug, you warn. I offer a bounty of two--- and then we return to the the deck, and i grin at you as I open the lid, and they spill into the cooling air--- some flying in pairs having found true love in a perfect mason jar. They dance before my eyes, vanish and again there is just us two. I meet your eye, turn girl shy--- and almost look away. But you are having none of it. You lift my chin, and whisper "Never look away---please?" A moment later your lips on mine, caress to kiss and the night sky shines down and stars laugh at the mortals who found their own quiet light in July, on the ridge. |
