The Savannah River

STANDING ON RIVER STREET
LOOKING TOWARD THE SEA
MAKES ONE WONDER OF THE PAST
HOW WONDEROUS COULD IT BE?

THE COBBLE STREETS LAID BY SLAVES
THE BUILDINGS ETCHED IN PAIN
THE SAILORS AND THE PIRATE SHIPS
ANCHORED WITH THEIR GAIN

THE HUSTLE AND THE BUSTLE
OF AN ERA LONG AGO
THE STAGE WAS SET, THE FEELINGS STRONG
READY FOR THE SHOW

GAZING AT THE MOORINGS
WHILE BREATHING FISHY AIR
FANTASIZE OF EARLIER DAYS
OF SEAFARERS AND THEIR LAIR

LEGEND TELLS OF PIRATES HOUSE
MADE OF SAVANNAH BRICKS
WHERE THE GHOST OF OLD CAPTAIN FLINT
HAUNTS AMONG THE WICKS

MANY A SAILOR WAS DRUGGED
THRU THE HIDDEN TUNNEL CARRIED
BENEATH THE CAPTAINS ROOM
THE RUM CELLAR TARRIED

UNWARY SEAMAN SHANGHAI'D
TO COMPLETE THE SHIPS CREWS
OF SHORTHANDED SHIP'S MASTERS
UNSCRUPULOUSLY THEY'D CHOOSE

THE VESSELS CARRIED BOOTY
FROM LONDON TO BOMBAY
TREASURES LEAVING SINGAPORE
EVEN TO THIS DAY

HUGE SHIPS CRUISE DOWN THE RIVER
WITH CARGO STACKED UP HIGH
REMIND US OF THAT ERA
OF DAYS AGO, GONE BY

TODAY THE DECK IS COVERED
WITH TRAILERS TWENTY DEEP
METAL SQUARE CONTAINERS
UNLOADED ON THE STREET

TO BE PICKED UP BY THE TRAILERS
TO TARRY DOWN THE ROAD
BRINGING STORES THEIR BOUNTY
AWAITING CARGO LOAD

ALAS THE MAGIC ROMANCE GONE
NO PIRATES ANY MORE
SO THANKFUL THAT THE BALLAST READS
" VIA SINGAPORE " !!!
