Cherokee

Impulsive rendezvous of lovers
Smokey mountains of indian lore
far from the maddening crowd
secluded sensual retreat

Towering above me
quiet titans of nature
as I drive closer to them
climbing upward, motor humming

Closer and closer
horizon of giants moving toward me
Pleasing to the eyes
yet frightening to the spirit

The rain having eased up
leaving the air mysterious and foreboding
Thick light grey clouds
of storms aftermath

Hovering above the tops
Oozing down the sides
nimbus icing sliding down the walls
of a still warm mountainside

My mind is mesmerized
by their gradiose stature.
Feeling so small in comparison
to these mounds of rock and trees

I am struck so deeply
I cannot hold back the tears
Inwardly, I chide myself
for lack of control

Difficulty seeing the road
thru my own stream of salty droplets
Forcing myself to dry up
my own flow of foolishness

Intense arousal of my senses
Thru visions of swollen land
pushed upwards
dipping suddenly into deep ravines

Stately they peak and rise
from the valleys between
Dark green with shadows of grey and black
framing the edges

Amid all days, sunny or overcast
there occurs phenomena
Small white clouds of smoke
constantly rise from between the trees

Spiraling upward in a never ending display
of pouf after pouf.
The haunting of smoke signals
from indian ghosts

Mountains alive, full of spirit,
calling me, "Come here, come closer!!!"
magnetically drawing me
with irresistible pull

They exude of time immemorial,
where others lived and died.
The underbrush remembers
footsteps of long ago

Bears and deer, indian children,
women kneeling down giving birth
Hunters and those hunted

Rock, shale and dirt
filled with tears and blood.
Shade and shelter of
nature's rising canopy treasure

These mountains are but a gift
to those fortunate enough to see them
and touch them

To taste and feel
the presence of enchanted giants
as they live and
breathe in staturesque charm

Torrential downpour of rain
drowning my last night
in the heights of Cherokee lore

Forever changing my life's ebb
enhancing my memories
of the haunting giants
and the love we shared.
