Ancient History

You tell me
I don't know you
or what you have done
and if I did
I wouldn't think
of you as I do.

Your eyes
go to the floor
as you remember
past sins
mistakes
shames
you have not spoken
for fear
of discovery.

All I know
is what I see
and that evidence
is all I need.
No one
forms my opinions
or tells my heart
who to care for.

Each of us
carries silent secrets
seldom shared
with anyone but God.

I don't need
your history.
Stop winding
the hem of your skirt
and find my hand.
I'm more interested
in who you are
than whom you've been.
