Fifty Years

Love in the Time of Cholera, by that guy Marquez,
remember that tome? the one where he says,
No length is too long, not even fifty years,
to wait for your love to come dry up your tears.

This I contemplate from the hood of my car,
while gazing away at the speckled map of stars.
I know at this moment my chances to recover,
I will never give my heart again to another.

Florentino Ariza, oh so young, did swear,
I will wait for my Fermina 'til grey threads her hair.
Alone I shall remain, though multitudes surround me,
My eyes focused ahead, toward the home where we're free.
