Tolkien wrote of rings indeed, and I read his words with the simple pleasure of a greedy child so dazzled by hobbits wizards, and weefolk that I missed the point that rings have power. And when you gave me a ring, fired not by ice but the cool warmth of fire opals glowing like the belly of a spirit elemental, I slipped it on my finger as innocently as Frodo. And even as it glowed in a box, it leapt to a flame on my hand that took my breath and I would look at it in wonder while minutes became hours hours became days and time did the magick trick of passing while we looked elsewhere. I took it off, but there it stayed for my mind's eye, gleaming like a bird of paradise. But I mistook ring for vow. Symbol yes, but not promise. Hope...but just a spoken dream made real for me by this glinting ring of flame that licks at me at times as pleasure, at times as pain. You give what you can, but how can I say that I would trade this fire ring forever, for one touch from your eyes? |
