two occupies one

In one breath we breathe.
Each other's spirits mingling as we sleep.
Arms and legs intertwined like the branches of one tree.

I open and close lashed lids-
assurance of your presence,
and steadfast, you are there,
in a slumber so sweet and thick with dreams.

Your heavy breathing draws me in,
and in each breath disappears my worried sighs.
Tender ease rests in my rib,
that God so gently took from you
and placed before my heart to protect.
