The Proposal

They say that love is blind.
And I found out how true that saying is.
Last night, I must have looked terrible.
My hair needed washing.
It was hanging in my face.
My barrettes were crooked.
I was wearing sneakers
and my slip was showing.
I had a loud sounding glitter dress on
with a stupid long sleeve shirt underneath.
I had smudged my mascara from rubbing my eye
Hadn't brushed my teeth.
My eyes were droopy from lack of sleep.
Only slept for one hour, the night before.
Talk about a mess.
and there we sat, outside the mall.
and what did he see when he looked at me ?
The cinderella of his dreams.
The woman he wanted to spend the rest of his life with.

We had many dress rehearsals before.,
where I was at my very best
all perky and squeeky clean and dressed for the occasion.
Where the settings were rank with music, candelight, and mood.
But I wasn't ready then.
His first proposal was very soon after meeting.
I squashed it with cruelty.
No, never again....... I love my freedom.
Why would I want to give up all this fabulous freedom?

The second proposal was met with confusion.
It's only a piece of paper....... we would do better to just live together.
Don't you think?

The third proposal was savored and rolled around in my mind's tongue.
I don't know............ maybe.......... maybe............ maybe later.....
It's too soon..............................  I am taking no chances this time......
You're scaring me.......

The fourth proposal was challenged....
Why should we ???   What advantage does it have ???
Am I crazy..... to even consider this ???

There were no more proposals.
Just feelings, and thoughts, and words, and discussions....
but no more proposals......

Until last night....
As we sat in the parking lot of the mall....
With no music,  no candlelight,  no mood,
no romantic setting.
But love is blind
and saw and felt what it wanted to
Love created the glamour and awe and the flicker of lights

God himself provided the rest
As the full blue moon shone through the windshield
and lit up our eyes
and painted my face with the necessary glow
the subtle hue
of moonlight
and
the little birds
that forgot to go south
and hung out in the mall trees
began to sing
nature's own music
to us

I knew it was coming
I could feel it
reaching into his pocket
the sparkle of the ring
hidden briefly in his clasped hand

His words were choked
and softly spoken
with broken held back tears
and emotion filled phrases
he bathed my heart
with the pureness of his soul

This time
I put my hand in his
and let him lead me
to his lake
and I gently stepped in
allowing his gentle waters
to touch me
cover me
and consume me

telling me
that I was the woman
he wanted to spend the remainder of his life with.
I could feel the warmth of his words
that he had bathed me with
many times before
but this time
was different
this time
I allowed them to touch me
and take me
to his world
as he gently
but firmly
slipped the ring on my finger
wiggling it slowly
as I watched
with the moon in my eyes
and the glow in my heart

After pushing it
all the way to
the engagement place
he looked upward
from my finger
to my eyes
where we remained
motionless
in intimate lace
intercourse of looks
sealed with a kiss
burning
sealing
a promise
for eternity.......................
