A Rose that Died

You called again this morning
as I watched the summer rain
shimmering against the dawn
and I felt that familiar pain

The telephone kept a buzzing
like an angry dragonfly
I ignored it's noisey clatter
as I heaved a heavy sigh

Although I won't talk to you
I remember all too well
the way it was last summer
the way we rose and fell

I watched you tend your garden
you loved to work outside
the oval buds of your crimson rose
that you grew with special pride

Our lives were like the evergreen
we thought we'd never fade
our hearts were filled with kinetic hope
of promises we made

I remember the excitement
of a pirate on the sea
as we sailed upon a reckless course
with a spirit wild and free

I remember your rubber ducky
your bath was filled with bubbles
like a kid, you splashed and played around
your life was free from troubles

No one could harness your spirit
as you flew on wings of grace
I fell in love with your aura
and the beauty of your face

Then one day from your garden
you gave me a beautiful rose
with poetic words of endearment
with the wonder of your prose

The flower quickly wilted
and died a death so grand
I pulled away in horror
as it pricked and cut my hand

You gave me thorns and thistles
that tore my dream apart
you shattered all I cared about
you broke my foolish heart

The tears I cried, I hid behind
a  cool and casual smile
I never let on, the pain I felt
while hurting all the while

Deception came in miniature
yes small and subtle ways
it crept upon me slow and sure
but gradually filled my days

And now you ring my phone again
much to my disdain
I prefer the loneliness of now
than to renew that long lost pain.
