I am from a world where "Wish Upon a Star" And eyes of childhood innocence Still gave hope at the age of sixteen I am from times when achievers are admired Yet those who dream and strive Find more roadblocks than encouragers I am from evening dinners at home disturbed By telemarketers, late night rehearsals, And a season of hopeless basketball games I am from Grandma's apple dumplings My father's Swedish Chef cooking And fishing all day in Grandfather's arms I am from summers of cantaloup, Autumns and winters that bite sharp And springs that warm my soul back to life I am from county fair talent shows, Ballerina dreams, and stages that breathe stories Of those whose shoulders I now rest upon I am from dozens of half-used dairies, A well-worn copy of "Little Women" And notebooks overflowing with verse I am from inspirational words spoken By those who were unknowingly Tucked in my heart as heroes forever I am from a self-acquired knowledge That the future contains no limits Except the restrictions I lay upon myself |
