Months later

Months later he went back to her.

On a balmy evening, the doorbell rang. She answered it to find him standing on the steps.
He managed to look both sheepish and casual.

'Hey, Babes'
He slowly smiled.

She didn't know what to say, so she let him in and closed the door.

Months ago, whilst still in pain, she had dreamt about him coming back.
The thought forever in her subconciousness.
And now he was here.

'I've missed you Babes'

She found she couldn't answer. So she just looked at him.
Memories of her recent heartache swirled through her mind.

'How are you?'

She took time over her answer of 'I'm Ok', silently adding a 'now' in her head.

'Look, I know I was a complete shit...'

She didn't disagree.
She remembered the reason he had left her.
Another woman, a girl from the office.
They hadn't had a raging affair behind her back, but it had gone beyond holding hands. He had been smitten enough to end their three year relationship.
Not that their relationship had been perfect. Is there anybody's that is?
But she knew, that if he had felt the same way about her that she did about him, he wouldn't have done it.

'I was thinking.... would you......consider......maybe .....giving it another go?'

Oh how she had waited to hear those words.

'and don't worry........its been finished a long time with  Louise'

Her heart stopped wavering and she looked into his eyes.
She had loved him, deeply. But she thought of the things he did or said that used to drive her mad.
Could they start again? Is it possible to go back to the beginning and start a fresh relationship with someone when you already know their faults?
She remembered the pain that she had been through. Then she remembered that she had come out the other side.
She was a different person now.
She felt different inside. She had started socialising again, She had gone for dinner with a couple of guys but neither had developed into anything more.
She hadn't found anyone to replace him yet. She hadn't found her Soulmate, but maybe one-day she would.
And she couldn't go back. Feeling, knowing, that she would be second best. The safety net.
She looked into his eyes.

'I'm sorry, I don't think I can'

She went and opened the door and waited for him to leave.
