I once heard of this place, where stars fell daily, while the sun was shining overhead. They would shoot across the sky, and no one would even take notice, it was such an ordinary event. There was a time, when the people would of stopped, and wished upon that shooting star, but noone believed in magic any longer. Occasionally, you would stumble across a piece of the star that fell in your path. Legend had it, that if you took it with you, it would bring you to your true love. Unfortunately, there were not many pockets filled with stardust. In this land of stars, you would expect extraordinary circumstances, or individuals. Rather there seemed to be an air of sadness, for when magic fails, so does the human spirit. Sometimes a person stumbles on their own feet, but rarely do they stumble across someone elses feet. This happened to be the circumstances one day, when two pairs of feet, were walking near each other. Little did they realize how unique their lives were, and how they were about to drastically change. How the stardust would find them. William wore plaid. Every day. Unfortunately, this left him with a very small wardrobe, and a limited view on clothing. He withdrew from people into his plaid world. Then at night, he would run away to the highest hill he could find, and watch the falling stars. For they were as equally brilliant at night. He was one of the few left who would wish on them, as they fell to their divine destruction. He would close his eyes, and dream of a world where he was free. Free of the world that kept him captive, in a world where magic was failing him. William kept a book of magic tricks hidden in his closet. People didn't like magic anymore, and disliked those who even hinted at it. Lorna wore skirts. Every day. She would sometimes be caught in the wind, and feel like a flower just before a storm. She would walk with her feet close together, and her eyes, were a bit too wide for stability. People felt shaken, if they looked into her eyes. Perhaps their reality was slightly altered. She ran free at night, this scared girl. Flowing freely to the music that made such composition in her head. She danced to the stars, as they made their spotlight on her, raining gently from the sky. She believed in their magic, and wished on it daily. Their paths were crossing, sometimes only for a moment. Her elbow would brush his, and awareness suddenly heightened in them both. Then they would think of the stars, their pockets heavy with the dust. Sadness then would take them, as they walked the concrete, waiting for their next neon light to turn green, and release them. Sadness, and hope of the next falling star, with the sun shining overhead. We momentarily can believe in synchronicity, that we are always drawn back to one individual. That somewhere in the greater scheme of things, someone else is as equally caught in this spiderweb of life and light. Struggling, perhaps, to break free? It's with this fundamental knowledge, that Lorna and William lived their lives. Hoping that their lives had a greater purpose, other then seeming freakish. The loneliest thing in the world, is living with the thought, that there might be no one else out there who understands. Lorna had this habit of staring. She could sit still for hours, and stare. At anything, anyone. People felt un-nerved if they caught her eyes on them. Suddenly their step would quicken, a look back over their shoulder. Then her face, with her luminous eyes, would find it's way into their memory. Wings of memory taking flight. She never truly left them. Her memory had magic. William was a clutz. Constantly tripping over invisible objects. He recovered gracefully, but never was actually graceful. He would trip into people, and the occasional small animal. And then one day, into a wide eyed girl wearing a skirt. Today they stumbled. Their feet intertwined into each others, and they fell. Legs falling, and arms waving in the air. William and Lorna fell into each other. And as they were meeting the ground, their pockets released the stardust. Falling around them as a shadow, vibrating in the air with magic. They fell forever it seemed, as the day vanished and the night ebbed in. They fell through earth and sky, they were carried by wind. They fell through gravity and into the darkness of space. Where magic is born. Sometimes we can see them shooting at night, these stars. William and Lorna, live where we cannot, they live in a land where stars are born and find each other. Then they fall through the nights sky with each other, until they fall to earth and someone else picks them up, and carries a little stardust in their pocket. |
