Family Reunion

They're throwing horseshoes in the yard
the grill is gassed up and smoking.
You and I have been left alone
on the front porch,
enthroned on the shaded swing,
reigning over the sea of
relatives who belong to you
and may one day belong to me.
On their way back
from the kitchen
they stop and ask me
how the wedding plans are coming,
where is my fiance off to
and why has he left me alone with you?
They laugh and wink at this great joke,
that there is something going on
between you and me,
but just once you touch my thigh
when we're alone,
and later your grandmother
pulls me aside to tell me
"Make sure you don't marry the wrong one."
