where are you now

where are you now

when are you finally coming home
the dinner's done, the fire is laid
the pie is cooling, and chickens fed
I can't believe you're really gone

why are you so late tonight coming in
the quilts are mended, the bed's made
beans are soaking, newspaper's read
I need to know, where you've been

what's taking you much too long tonight
the canning can wait, and fields to wade
the harvest's plenty, to there I'll be led
I've got a feeling something ain't right

how is it I am always worried about you
night light's come on, see daylight fade
the dogs are quiet, cat's gone to bed
why are you so long past and overdue

who are these folks telling me you're dead
why I smell your scent, see bills you paid
what are they saying about the lover I wed
when just this morning I kissed your head
