Three O' Hearts Blues

He arrange jewels on th' dresser, started straightenin' the room,
Some of his fainter memories got stirred by scent o' her perfume.
Thought it best to set th' picture face down now since she gone,
Way he was taught man should hold hisself like nothin' goin' on.
He look out the window, watchin' storm like he never seen before,
An' as he get lost in th' floods came two taps on his back door.

Seem kinda odd to have company, but curiosity overtook his doubt,
Seein' her knee deep in th' water, she was sure he'd turn her out.
But his place was warm, inviting, an' hospitality always applied,
Sure enough, he help her to the porch, makin' sure she was dried.
Sittin' at the table, sippin' on coffee, she look toward his eyes,
Hopin' for some sign of reaction, but he show no hint o' surprise.

She then reach out her hand toward him to caress his familiar face,
He shook his head slightly, indicatin' this neither time nor place.
standin' to refresh their cups, she start to ask why he let her in,
Thought better of it, all of sudden he turn and explanations begin.
Each had an affair, but on her death a double truth came across,
Man and wife loved this same woman; he couldn't bear another loss.
