Fleet

An eerily familiar sight: down on one knee, trying to be brave,
Circling from marriage proposal to this homage at her grave.
Had to always bring lilies; their brightness accented her smile,
Countless bouquets where she lay would fit her elegant style.
No emotions dared his face nor any memory permitted escape,
Nothing remained but her name, dates, his mouth hanging agape.

Considering this tragedy, would you dare to ask yourself why?
Ponder eternal question of how all we love must come to die?
If a heart beats once, will it know joy that love can bring?
Are these the luckiest souls, never having to lose anything?
Within tears some lament the fallen, curse life as cruelest task,
While others pray reunion as the only blessing which they ask.

Time came to leave now, but he whispered she'd see him again,
Then he put his hand where her heart was and revealed just when.
He began to leave, stopped for a moment, turned to blow a kiss,
No matter how long they were apart, she would remember this.
Walking away, he felt her presence, as she'd always declared.
"I am with you so long as you remember the life we shared."
