On the Balcony

Star of Orion
Staring down from the sky
I look back and think
Maybe a loved one
Is watching you too

Not a star but a cluster
That shines with one light
It seems to flicker from white
To electric mauve and blue
With its shimmering

Every time I think a thought
That has to do with my heart
It seems to me it changes
From what it was a minute before
As if it knows me intimately

Is it wrong that I would think
That you're the one star
That everyone looks to
To wish their heart upon
I took history, not geography

I know four things in the night sky:
The Southern Cross
And that saucepan thing
The Star of Orion
And the man in the moon

A bit unromantic perhaps
But the night sky has so much beauty
I don't need the knowledge
Of the names humans gave it
In order to appreciate it

To plot the heavens
With compass and map
Or to wish upon a star
To navigate a starship
Or just be as I am
