Better Than Chocolate

It's five in the morning,
And my sleepy serenade
Has broken slow.
I open my eyes to the day,
And behold your sincere face,
Quiet in sleep's repose--
A far cry from the sinful games
Of the waning night.  Sometimes
It is good to steal apples from the vine,
To taste their flesh, just to feel
What some call punch-drunk passion.

And still with vivid warmth,
Your arms are around me,
As if I am yours for safe-keeping.
Abound, the still, blithe air
Is crispy-cold, but I am
Wrapped in simple serenity,
As I watch you, lying here
Beside me.
I think to myself,
"This is the only thing better
Than chocolate."
