TIMING BELTS

TIMING BELTS

I

He called her to say his ship
had finally come in
just as she wrote him
he wasn't even paddling close

II

come on, wade in
and pull the plug
help these cold tears
finally drain away
give those shoulders
one more shrug
and watch me bottle
bittersweet today

III

you figure out how I might care
bitter almonds and sour lemons
all have their place somewhere

IV
change in your pockets reminds you
how we had fun with the little things
the view of the sunsets were free
and I didn't need any diamond rings

dust on the top bookcase is growing
the blinds have been closed for weeks
depression has me no longer glowing
and the halfbaked poems need tweaks

missing you is getting much harder
when each passing day is so long
memories become overdone fodder
as time or distance is proving wrong

I've jumpstarted a battery on the truck
and put new tires on my very long list
what's at the top of that list is a fff-hug
timing belt and more than being kissed

V
hey, go put another song on, cowboy
your jingle, jangle, jingle ain't
in time with the backbeat in my head
