Grapevine

No sooner had I set foot in Grapevine than local tongues began to spread the word,
On the arrival of a man of intrigue with one of most colorful pasts you never heard.
Talk of the newcomer invaded social gatherings galore; gossips ran the rumor mill,
Have to admit I was so fascinated by their version of me even I couldn't get my fill.
I had to be a government witness in hiding, perhaps a foreigner; better yet, a spy!
So many stories floated about in speculation it became impossible to tell he from I.

Everyone knows who you are in small towns; this place beats everything I've seen,
I just learned I own most of the county and once ran a New York fashion magazine!
I dance the calypso smartly, am an expert chef; I even wrestled bears one-handed,
Seen more women than a gynecologist and ran Mission Control as the Eagle landed.
As I listened to these tales of my exploits, I found myself thoroughly in envy of me,
If you had done half of the things everyone attributed to moi, wouldn't you also be?

You take the caterpillar of one person's story, it then becomes butterfly secondhand,
If ever you wish to confuse the people, tell them the truth; then you will understand.
Nothing gets in the way of good conversation; not even whether their subject is fact,
Beware the species of busybodies that know you so well you've never time to react.
I believe it's time for me to take my leave from here, and Lord, wouldn't you know,
Almost forgot what brought me to these parts to begin with: their famous cup of Joe.
