Mother's sons

Oh my son, you showed the truth
When you were born November night
The cold winds blew, the promise of youth
Fell aside for me that night

The truth of love was revealed to me
The moment they rolled you in
Behind the glass I adored your face
And I knew you would always win

You were scarred like a raging bull
The fight for life had raked you
Like the claws of an angry cat
But your little heart was true

And now you wear the Navy blue
And roam the seas so deep
Where once my baby tugged at me
A man fights while we sleep

The rockets scream, the shells lay waste
Hear shriek of phantoms wrath
God help the boy who swabs the decks
And lead him down your path

To all our sons, whose mothers cry
Is heard across the land
Godspeed and hope you soon will fly
Away from burning sand
