OLD BRINE DUEL TO REMEMBER

OLD BRINE DUEL TO REMEMBER

There is ice and stillness all around
where Philpot and Rudkin have shot.
One in the air, the other a fatal round
for her hand and his honour, whatnot.

Down on this river are more browns
than one ever imagined God's got.
Away from the hurry, no sea biscuits,
they burned, and no more hides rot.

There by the Rennie, a sleepy town
may somehow remember, or not.
That once was the last duel to recall.
Can you tell me her name, I forgot?
