I was burning in the yard today And thought of you, and her, and her How the layers of pine needles had built up Over the years, interspersed with oak leaves And assorted other organic materials How hot the pine needles burn But so quickly, and how colorful the flame From the oak leaves, and how smoky The plastic and other trash seems to be Somehow the memories came back My pine needles, How I loved you when you were green How hot the fire burned, how sweet your scent My oak, my strength, your colors still enrapture me Though you are long burned out My plastic lover, through the glass Shimmering darkly, smoke and mirrors Paddling quickly ahead of me to escape the storm Laughing and shouting with joy Until you melt into an unrecognizable mass Of indifference and loathing Burn baby. Burn, like Detroit and Chicago in the 60's I will bask in your warmth today, and then Shower you with water from the hose As I have other places to be |
