HE BLEW ON DEEP BLUE BLUES

HE BLEW ON DEEP BLUE BLUES

hear what a daft jazzman from Glasgow
finally taught me one musical horn night
more scrambled than Tmershi Duwhop

man, this jazzman was quite entertaining
draining that brass horn of all it had
measure after measure of blues pleasure

way past the Laines of Frankie and Cleo
long before Davis filed Weather Report
and Jezebel was flipped with Rose, Rose

playing I love you to my own aching heart
he dragged me from cellar club to cabaret
smelling faint roses and lotus past smoke

the tunes and the notes had a sequence
I hadn't managed to hear before, but now
grabbed me, realizing some consequence

misty eyes now weeping at the sad score
thinking of the missed ships in the night
his horn sounded thru fog loud once more

in pipes only a jazz mad Scot could play
and then his tune became a clear chanty
then peacefully, Danny Boy, he must stay

my friend played nothing, no note again
but now knew I had listened well this time
packed his horn, said my life would begin

telling me to follow your lead out to sea
to listen to your lyrics rather than grieve
If your ship's in the bay, don't leave me!
