We got the call at midnight You screamed there'd been a fight That you and he were drinking a lot You begged us to come before someone got shot We arrived to a shambles of broken stuff Your face was all swollen, he'd been very rough The blood flowed from scalp and face and eyelids We gathered some clothes and picked up the kids Like a gaggle of geese the folks came and went Doctors and nurses and police officers sent To examine and question and take a few pics Now two in the morning and many a stitch To the expressway and over to mom's We took you to safety, and drugs for your qualms You and kids safe, and mom looking out To make sure no neighbors knew what was about You hid for six days in mom's neighborhood Pretended that everyone was all doing good And then you went back, kids and all He promised he'd never again have such a fall His beach boy good looks, his pocket full of money You never should have gone back to him honey Why won't you listen to your sister and me? As long as you're with him you'll never be free I like living well you said at the time Who else has a house that's bigger than mine He's such a nice man when he isn't that way And he promised he'd never do it again that day Now twenty years later you've finally got smart I'm glad you found someone to heal your heart Small house in the country and man who loves you I'll never again try to tell you what to do I still have the picture from that awful night Found it today, oh my God what a sight Head swollen, eyes purple, and blood everywhere And no longer family, you know I still care The cousins are happy, our lives are much better And once in a while we'll exchange a small letter |
