WEDDING BELLS and FOG HORNS

I really enjoyed his company
we always had a great time together.
We went to poetry readings, movies, parties,
bowling, and the best restaurants.
He was witty and gregarious
and smiled constantly.
So easy to talk to
with a kind and generous heart.
We enjoyed hugging and cuddling
and shared a few kisses.
I liked the way he rubbed my neck,
massaged my shoulders,
and feather tickled my skin.
We never went any further than that.
Both content to be just where we were.
I had no desire to take it to a different level
and neither did he.
I wasn't dating anyone else at the time.
So why did I break up with him ?
His friends and family began to slip me hints
of how serious he was about me.
I felt terrible -  like I was leading him on.
He was falling in love and I wasn't falling anywhere.
He was hearing  "Wedding Bells"
and all I was hearing was  "Fog Horns".
I had to pull the man from the belfry,
before he began to tug on the ropes.
