I spoke to my students in class last week About autumn colors in the garden I spoke of "the autumn of our lives", A silly metaphor indeed When mature folks lose more cells than they produce In comparison with leaves losing more chlorophyll than they produce I didn't take the metaphor far enough, though I didn't expand the comparison Just as fall isn't the beginning of the end of a tree's life Fall isn't the beginning of the END of our love lives Fall is when trees invest in their roots Fall is when couples invest in their relationship It's when we settle down to talk about what's important What's important to you and me and us We fill our own roots with the food of the future Building blocks to take us through the down times They're bits of memories that become the foundation For growth when our lives turn around Indeed, they are the basis of the change They are our Spring We create memories every day Some become the real beginning of a new life. |
