Lobstah and Pineapples

i wish it were more like New England here
more falling fall colors
more salty sea air
more chill
more damp cold in my lungs
i feel more at home there
than here
even though this is home
there is where my heart goes when it's homesick
i can see us there
in an old white colonial house
with black shutters and a red door
with a pineapple hung over it at xmas time
we would have a golden retreiver
and children with perfect table manners
they wouldn't say "pop" they'd say "soda"
but we probably won't make a life over there
we will stay here and be rained on
we will have kids that recycle and boycott umbrellas
we'll get a modest home with a yard big enough for a garden
i will long for people that say "lobstah" and "chowdah"
and wish for saltwater taffy with sunny beach summers
while i drive my volkswagen to PTA meetings
in quiet, rainy traffic
without ever once honking the horn
