Unmasked

You have painted my heart with bars and rings,
A bandit's mask to wear inside
Yet what have I stolen from you?
What have I taken?
What duty have I extorted from you, a robber baron of love?

A raccoon heart you've given me, painted to be like yours, you say
"Raccoon not robber baron.
We should scavenge the night together,
Wash our paws in streams,
Leaving behind tiny prints so like hands."

I follow, but instead of conspirators together,
I am in mute, raccoon rebellion
When we reach the stream,
You watch from the shade in injured query
As I scrub off the prison stripes, tearing flesh to do so.

You do not understand, your raccoon heart puzzled:
Why wouldn't I wish to hide too?
Why wouldn't I trust the night's sanctity and secrecy?
"Our love is safest in the dark."

There aren't words to explain.
Your painted stripes are a prison.
I must be free to love.
