La Iglesia de Santa Teresa

I'd never seen such beauty.  The flaming June sun radiated off your white chiffon dress with blinding rainbows.  Your eyes shone with delight, and your long black hair shone against your chest.  You clutched your new rosary tightly, as if it were the only thing keeping you afloat.

I wanted to cross the street and be a part of your moment, but your fathers stern glare kept me away, as he stood at the top of the bright marble steps.  I could not understand the conversation, having never heard Spanish until a few weeks before, but I could feel the joy and the love.  I miss the feeling of belonging to a community.

It was your first communion, and you were the first Maria I ever loved.

I wish you were six and I was eight again.  I'd like to think I would cross the street next time, and face your fathers wrath.
