Once upon a time, a boy met a girl. They found, slowly but surely, that they had a great deal in common, and enjoyed one another's company very much, and began to make a story together. They found that they liked each other so much, that they each began to share and enjoy things that other had introduced them to. As time went on, the boy and the girl grew ever closer. So close in fact, that they began to spend more time with each other than they did with other friends. When they were together, they found that things were very natural and easy, and neither of them wanted for anything. The bond that they had developed grew and grew. The girl woke up one day to find the boy sleeping peacefully next to her, and took advantage of that moment to watch him dreaming and reflect on her feelings for him. As she thought about the place in her heart for him, she realized that it was bigger than she had imagined. She felt that it must be a special thing for this feeling to have tiptoed up on her like it did. She wondered if she should tell him about this feeling, but decided that maybe she shouldn't. It wasn't that she expected him to hurt her, but she didn't know how he would react to such a thing, nor did she want to complicate his life. In spite of her own objections though, she wanted him to know that he was loved, because knowing that you are loved is a very important and special thing. So she set about doing little things for him. Things that were more than thoughtful in passing, more than a friend would do, things that she thought were meaningful in small but beautiful ways. It seemed that sometimes the boy understood what the girl was trying to reveal, and at other times, it seemed not to make much of an impression on him at all. This didn't matter to her though, for she knew that one day, he too, would wake up and realize how big the place in his heart must surely be for her. This went on for some time, and things were mostly wonderful. But there were times when the place in the boy's heart for her seemed to have been made smaller by outside things, or things that lurked in shadows like fear, sadness, and indecision. These times, the girl thought that the walls in the place in her heart for him were surely cracking and buckling under the strain of not knowing. But the boy always came back to her, reassured her, and reinforced the walls and patched the cracks. This was good. One day, the place in her heart had grown so big, and the outside things had crept in so close, that the girl felt she could no longer keep her heart safe. So, while it was a very hard thing to do, and she didn't know what would happen next (which she didn't like very much at all), she gave her heart away and took it back all at the same time. She told him in her own small way, in her own small voice, that he was loved. She also told him that the things that skulked in the shadows frightened her, and she didn't want to be afraid anymore. They had made a story together, she told him, but she wasn't sure how it would go anymore... how it was supposed to end, if indeed it was supposed to end at all. So the girl waited for the boy she had met to decide how the story would go, or even how it might end. She felt better knowing that he knew he was loved. She felt better knowing that there was a place in his heart for her. She felt better knowing that she had done what she could, if not all the things she should have. She felt worse for having given him her heart and taking it back. She felt worse for knowing that there was something unfinished between them. She felt worse knowing that she had done what she could, but not all the things she should have. She was unsure of most everything in that moment, except that she knew how big the place in her heart was for him, and that there was good there. She knew that there was a place in his heart for her, and there was good there, too. She knew that once upon a time, a boy met a girl, and they found, slowly but surely, that they had a great deal in common, and enjoyed one another's company very much, and began to make a story together. |
