As dusk approached She grasped a worn blanket And headed for the beach With a glass of merlot For company She stood looking at the ocean Only hours earlier it had been Crystal blue Now it was turning black Reminding her that it was Also the grave of soldiers Like her, the ocean knew many emotions And only those who cared to search Found them. Like a lost friend or an old lover She had a need for its company tonight And a listening ear for her heart. She walked a short distance The wind blowing fiercely Her hair whipping her face As the sea sprayed her with mist As the sun was setting She found a piece of driftwood And scribble a word in the sand P-A-T-I-E-N-C-E Then sat down on the warm sandy earth Waiting for the tide to roll in As she waited, she buried her feet in the sand Needing to feel intensely connected to the earth The warmth was comforting And yet her feet, bound by the earth Reminded her that tonight this was where she belonged There was no where to go, nothing to do Here her mind was free to be Deaf to old memories or savoring the roar of the surf Wrapped in the blanket, sipping her merlot She watched lovers walk past her Arm in arm As she choked on isolation Her heart aching for a great love As the tide rolled in She watched the sea slowly erode The word she had written in the sand Reminding her that love is like water Nothing is gentler than water Yet love, like water, can be strong And cut crevices in rock over time Without it, all of life withers Without the hope of finding a great love The soul withers away The ocean reminds her Of the need for time and patience To sit silently in the shadows of the earth and wait With senses fully present Watching the waves in synch with nature's rhythm Listening to the roar of the surf Inhaling the scent of the ocean Feeling the warm sandy earth on her feet And the taste of the sea on her lips As darkness approaches She has absorbed the lesson of the sea - To sit patiently while living life fully And be ready to live passionately When her great love arrives Jmt (c) 2005 |
