One night we ran away your sweet slick hand in mine and we climbed the hills and raced rivers on our way out of town. Our hopes and plans, our wishes and words flowed as fast and happy as the speeding wheels of your beat up dodge and I tingled with the joy of being yours. You watched the road but shot me a sidelong grin every now and then. We were aiding and abetting each other in our great escape, whatever fear and doubt we felt slid away as we crested a hill and looked out over the sea. We stopped the car and ran the rest of the way up the hill and watched sunset spill its pink and red and orange rays over the water until everything, the sea, the air the light was bathed in lavender glow, the world was coated in wonder, and my racing heart slowed with the peace and certainty of the night, that we were right that as long as we stayed together everything would be beautiful. |
