The Skin Underneath

I used to wrap your memories
in newspaper—
now, they are new again,
a lightly lined disaster,
a message
about myself that I
have been trying
to forget.  I can’t forget.
You’ve marked me, the skin
underneath my skin, touched
beyond touching.  Only my eyes
tell your story.  I am sure
that you have forgotten,
forgotten that I
used to wrap your memories
in newspaper, a gift of onyx—
I tried to tell my heart, until
everything was shown.
But if I had realized
what I already must have known,
I wouldn’t have wasted the paper,
I wouldn’t have tried so hard
to protect you.  I didn’t protect me—
I didn’t even know how.
I loved you, and it
changed me.
