Alternate endings...

But I didn’t stop you that day
And by the time you sought me again
Years later
It was too late.
I was speaking broken Spanish and
Dreaming of representing illegals
And salsa dancing
And drinking tequila in Mexico
And you were
Already knee deep in life in
What was once the little town
That held me prisoner.
You made a life there
Just like you said you would.
And you knew that night
As I did
That I could not go home again.
Instead
I went confidently in the direction of my dreams
Just as Thoreau begged of me
And I left.

Forever loveless--
Godless.
Writing poetry to a life I once lived
With you.
