the things we try to disassemble

This isn't something a fresh coat of paint
and a smile can fix, and your forged receipt
will do not no good, here.  There is nothing
owed or borrowed,
just taken and twisted.

It's strange,
the things we try
to disassemble, when we don't know
how it works, and if it ever
will work again: like clockwork
(heartwork), with a gear
or spring missing--
every stone
was once a smile.
Do you always break
what you can't understand?

Reacting is just an excuse,
a belittled reason
for an unarmed vindication,
and the unfamiliar face
is neither mine or yours,
when the ghost-pale touch of promise
vanishes.
