Vaquero Way

Texan, of Vaquero blood,
Pure and true
And larger than life
Just as I’d dreamt you to be.

You found me
Alone and lost in the South
A frustrated, over-educated Yankee woman,
Not easily broken.

“Take me to my New York!” I whinnied and stomped,
“Give me a martini and today’s Times!  I don’t need anyone to love me!
My path is clear!”
You drew me closer as I pushed away
Stronger than me--
I could have broken your grasp if I’d wanted to, of course,
But, without knowing why, I stayed.

And when you finally whispered sweet Spanish in my ear
I forgot anything I ever remembered about sex and love
And learned it all again, as yours.
