Your words escaped you, fugitives of forgiveness, asking and taking in the same shallow breath, warned of the undercurrents, the rivers that run deep in the bed of loss, a slight smile that could break even the sea. But all the twilight in all the world could not undo your meaning, and the fate of skin, the skin of fate, yields, conceding, acknowledging you and I. Railed against the blue your heart would tumble, once exposed where mine had been, leaping and sputtering, like feet on the too hot sand, brave where I had been, honest as I had been, but stronger than I was able to be then. Your words may have escaped you, but your presence did not elude me, and all the world dried up in a single drowning smile. I was, sometimes, angry. I was, carefully, lost. I was the unknown depths, but no more, no more here I am. |
