hails

26/5/2007

Listening to the blowing strong wind that comes right before the rain. Hearing the trees' leaves and branches rub against each other. Drop after drop, it starts, hails, heavy rain and stormy cold weather. Calmly she tried to compose herself, as she was lying in her bed trying to stop the endless tears that she had shed over him. Restless, constantly tossing and turning, not being able to fall asleep, she lifted her head in an attempt to adjust her pillow, and couldn't resist the urge to look over her shoulder to find the spot where he once laid, empty and cold.

She got the shivers and a feeling of void and emptiness that couldn't be filled nor chased away. She closed her eyes in an attempt to lose herself in her sleep, but despite all attempts she failed. She had her eyes shut but she was wide awake, just going over every word he said before he left.

She partially opened her eyes, looking outside her bedroom window; with all the sounds that she could hear, the only thing that she could see was the darkness, rain drops hammering against her window and a tree's shadow on her bedroom floor.

She gave up on trying to sleep, she slowly got out of bed and her warm feet touched the cold carpet-less floor. She stood up, and the wooden floor beneath her feet started to squeak. Step by step, she walked towards her bedroom door, and down the stairs she went.

She stood in the middle of that spacious empty house, just listening to the beats of her racing heart, the quickening of her breath and the words he once said just kept ringing in her head. Slowly she moved towards the back door and started unlocking it by quietly turning the key.

Barefoot, just wearing her long white night dress, she stepped outside the house, just to feel the freezing cold wind rub against her cheeks and creep up against her entire body. Her long brown silky hair got messed up, going all over the place; she kept walking, trying to chase his words away, trying to erase the memory of him that lingered in her mind for such a long time.

Wandering around in the dark, carrying him in her thoughts, a burden on her heart he was for he was anchoring her from moving on. Stepping on tiny branches and hearing them crumble beneath her feet; she kept going on, till exhaustion consumed her.

Her fatigued body finally gave in, she fell down to be covered in mud, lying on the ground, soaked from the rain from her head to her toes, just looking into the sky above, barely being able to keep her eyes open for it was raining vigorously and she was worn out.

She surrendered, gave in to her tiredness and she finally passed out. She woke up to find herself warm in her bed, and she panicked for she didn't know what had happened nor how did she get there. It took her some time to realize it was all part of her imagination, part of a dream, a hallucination, for she knew he never really existed, except in her head.

She broke down, cried, got angry, tried to fight the way that she felt and it consumed her, she was odds and ends, a wreck, tormenting herself for the mess she was in. She pulled the bed cover over her head, hoping to isolate herself from her thoughts, and just to add to her confusion, there it was, a smudge of mud that covered her hand just to keep her wondering some more.
