Just Another Name, Just Another Face

I'm going to do you a favor.  Okay, I'm going to do myself a favor in the process.  But, really, nothing happens by accident.  Trust me, I know.  I've caused more "accidents" than I care to admit.  I do believe that 'coincidence' is a fallacy.  Fate is another.  And fidelity--well, don't even get me started on that.  They call it a line for a reason: it's thin, and clear-cut, and easily crossed.  You catch my meaning?  Call me cynical.  Call me a realist.  Call me anything you like, love (well, anything but sweetums--I hate that).  It's just another name, for just another face.

But, look, back to this favor.  If you love her, down to your bones, through a hurricane and back again--then stay.  Don't stick you damn toe in the pond unless you're going to jump in.  And don't ever ripple the surface without the intention of sticking around for a while.  The waves are pretty--but they're also delicate.  So, if you love her, love her (and if you don't, leave).  And let that be it--the end-all, be-all, everything and anything.

But, honey, if you don't...well, that's just a whole different ocean.  And the water's a strange color, and you can never quite see below the surface--only glimpses.  But you can't sit on the shore forever.  You can't sit by the ocean forever.  You've either got to dive in, and risk it--or get the hell outta Dodge.  Or, you know, Daytona.

Because love isn't like an ocean--not really.  It won't stick around, waiting for some change in the wind.  The tide's always shifting, even if the waves are coming in steady gasps.  Eventually, the water chills, because when you're not looking--when you're not paying attention--the summer falls away, and winter comes to call.  And nobody in their right mind wants to try and swim in cold waters.  Then again, I think that just might be the crux of the whole conundrum--because nobody in love is ever in their right mind.  Because, believe you me, love makes an idiot out of everybody.  Or, in some cases, in makes a bigger idiot out of somebody.

Everyone knows it's always made a monkey out of me.
