A Halloween treat

Alone in my lair
I sit and wait
For nightly creatures
To pass through the gate

A pirate, a cowboy
A fairy, a ghost
All trick or treating
With eyes full of hope

Approaching the door
Their step they do slow
Who’s to ring the bell
Only time will it show

One brave little finger
Shakily extends
Upon glowing button
Doth press it in

The barking of hounds
Raise such a clamor
Eerie sounds escape
The looming dark manor

Heavy footsteps approach
And the door begins to creak
Just a little at first
Then with a mighty sweep

Silent gasps escape
As wide open eyes
All set themselves
On the coveted prize

In unison they cry
Without missing a beat
The well rehearsed line
‘Trick or Treat’

With outstretched arms
And grins from ear to ear
Holding their pumpkins
Cascading candy they hear

An earnest ‘Thank you’
Rings though the night
They turn on a dime
Heals in full flight

To awaiting parents
They show their new plunder
Where to next
They ask in excited wonder

Children and adults
Of all ages it seems
Equally enjoy
A Happy Halloween!
