i kept the blanket that we made love on / remember? / cramped in back of my 1978 mazda / parked in the icy blackness out on the boat ramp / the heater never could keep up with us / we fogged the insides of the windows with our insistence i never knew that you bled that night / until the yellow pallor of the daylight revealed the fluids you left behind on my blanket / perhaps you always knew you would leave me behind too now / no one knows the story but me / of a ragged pink blanket that sits neatly folded on the chair in the basement / with a heart shaped stain near the edge and sometimes late at night / deep in the december darkness / i still wonder / why i keep it after all these years / and where you are / and what life has been for you and if you remember |
