Yesterday,
I saw someone
who looked just like you.

And that almost-you
was enough
to start my heart, beating
backwards, arrhythmic
and wild.

It was like a history lesson,
designed to illuminate
all the little flaws
and beautiful failures,
all patiently held
in a face that wasn’t yours.

Yesterday
was nothing more
than a missed realization,
a broken heartbeat,
a day in need of repair—

it was almost me,
finding you, almost.
